Great cracks opened out in several streets, houses being shaken from their foundations roof. Numerous ceilings came down, brick walls cracked, doors and -windows vers wrenched out of position, and nearly all the finest residences in the city damaged. The area affected is about 15 aires jj extent. Not a solitary room; ; palatial residence of Mr J. E..Wood, known as "Jismond House,*?;,escaped damage. It will cost between £7000 and £8000 to,repair. ■ A crack extends right across : % floor of the Anglican Cathedral, /froa' the eastern door to the baptistry.- . It was at first thought that the'creep had been confined to the hfll, hut- tha afternoon it was discovered toliave worked down the hill, reachingvto-tla lower end of Bang-street,.- onev;block away from the centre of the city.
