■ II LIBERAL AND LABOUR FEDERATION, AUCKLAND BRANCH. The Auckland branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation met last evening, the president (Mr. P. J. Nerheny) being in the chair. A notification was received from the Premier that the resolutions of tbe Clevedon and Auckland branches respecting plural voting for county council and road board elections bad been noted, and would recelve the careful, consideration of the Government. In reply .to the request -of the branch that an oil-launch should be provided for the nse of the Auckland -water police, the Minister for Justice (Hon. J. McGowan) wrote that at present the police had Instructions to hire a boat or launch when necessary, and pending the improvements In operation at the. wharves it would be very injudicious to provide a launch. So soon as the police had proper accommodation for a lann'cb, however, the matter' wonld be favourably considered. The president considered that the reply was unsatisfactory. While the police were running about In search of a launch, those whom ft was Intended to succour would in all probability be lost. A launch should be supplied by the Government Immediately. BENEFIT CONCERT. A benefit concert was tendered to Mrs. W. Hartshorne and family by the members Of the Court Chisman. 7596, A.0.F., and other friends at the Foresters' Hall. Newton, last night. There- was _ large attendance. The programme presented met with hearty approval. The V.M.C.A. orchestra rendered a number of selections, under tbe direction of Mr. W. J. England. Vocal Items were contributed by the Misses Moon and. Edna Gilllngham, and Messrs. W. Aspinnll. H. Blakeley. A. McElwaln, and J. W. Ryan. A violin solo was played by Miss Claudia Hanncken. The promoters anticipate being able to hand over a substantial cheque to the distressed family. NORTHERN WAIROA A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. Th? Northern Wairoa j-grienlf.ural and Pastoral Association instructed the secretary to interview the directors of the Northern. Wairoa Co-operative Dairy Company to arrange for a specuTl prize for the best average test for the coming season of a herd of cows belonging to a supplier of the Northern Wairoa Dairy Company, members unanimously agreeing to give every encouragement to the dairy industry The secretary reported that the donation-list for the forthcoming show amounted to £87 10/ '-lash and trophies), several valuable trophies being given for special classes. Mr. Peter Jones sent a plan, showing his suggested Improvements for the new saleyards. The matter was fully gone into, and the fo:iowing resolution passed: "That, subject to the addition of 24 extra pens, the plan of Mr. Peter Jones be adopted and the new yards be built accordingly," It was also decided to purchase sufficient puriri sleepers for posts, and to push on the work to a successful Issue. MT. ROSKILL SCHOOL. At a meeting of tbe Mt. Roskill School Committee, held last evening, the annual examination report was read, and on the motion of Mr. Peet (chairman) It was resolved that the headmaster and tbe members of his' staff should be complimented on the success of the year's work It was agreed that the committee urge oh the Hon. the Minister for Education the desirability of the Government's supplying school books at cost price. Mr. Peet announced that he had £7 towards the cost of the annual picnic. ENGINEERS' SOCIAL. The Auckland branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers celebrated the fortysecond year of its existence by a smoke concert last evening. There were upwards of 100 of the trade present, of which one-third were apprentices. Tho president of the branch. Mr. Barstow, was in the chair, and gave the visitors a cordial welcome, and proposed tbe toast of "The King." Mr F. Roycroft gave a brief history of the society since its formation, mentioning that since I 18.1 it had disbursed iv benefit to Its mem-' bers—out of work, sick, funeral, and superannuation—tlic sum of £7,330,000. The vocal and instrumental music was well | rendered by selected singers.. All present agreed that it was by far the best gathering held by the engineers, and gave high I praise to the sub-committee who engineered ' the programme.
