The contract for the building of the Union Company's new turret steamer has been placed with Messrs W. Doxford and Sons, Sunderland. She is % to be about 4000 tons, 410 ft in length, 43ift beam, and 22ft depth, with engines 22in, 37Jn. and 61m, by 42in stroke. A speed of 10} knots has ta be attained, and the steamer ready for delivery in December. The contract price Is stated to be about £35,000. She is to be used in the company's general trade on tne New Zealand coast, and will be the first turret deck steamer in. the fleet.
