AUCKLAND TRAMWAYS.
QUESTION IN THE HOUSE.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, Thursday. Mr. Poole asked the Minister for Public Works a series of questions with reference to the Auckland tramways, and whether he was prepared to institute a system of regular inspection which would reduce the danger to life and limb. The interrogation also demanded whether the Minister would insist in future upon all cars being equipped with seats and glass fronts for the protection of motormen, upon magnetic or. vacuum brakes to ensure the safety of pedestrians, and upon sufficiently wide passage ways in the cars to allow of rapid egress in case of accident." In a note to his question, Mr. Poole points out that the present overcrowding is so acute that with poor brake power the motormen and conductors are seriously hampered in their duty, and proposed regulations permitting the continuance of this congestion are likely to produce serious, if not fatal, accident's.
