Toe new steamer is of the shelter-deck type, and has three complete steel decks, extending all fore and aft. The cargo space is divided into five large holds, three of these being insulated and prepared for the reception of frozen meat cargo, for the preservation of which a very complete refrigerating installation has been fitted. Each, of tbe holds is provided with a large latchway equipped with a couple of powerful steam winches, and the necessary derricks for expeditiousry dealing with a large general cargo, the derricks being swung from the masts and special derrick posts. At present the Toroa carries a crew of sixteen all told, ■which includes three engineers and three firemen. The vessel's tonnage can be increased considerably without any increase in the crew being required by the shipping regulations. The Toroa Is now compelled to carry a crew which should suffice for a vessel several times her size. The Cape was rounded on June 28, and thence onward the vessel experienced the usual weather prevalent in southern latitudes, consisting of gales from NWW and SW. The weather was fairly good on the whole. After passing Tasmania a strong easterly sale was encountered. A very heavy head sea quickly rose, which retarded the ship's progress. Large .quantities of water and heavy spray were continually on the decks. After blowing hard for two days the wind subsided, but a heavy swell was running until after Cape Maria Van Diemen was passed at 1.30 a.m. yesterday Fine clear weather aha smooth sea prevailed thence to arrival. After discharging here the Kumara sails for the South to complete.
