MOUNT ALBERT ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.
St. Luke's Hall. Mount Albert, was filled , to overflowing last night, when the Mount Albert Orchestral Society gave their first concert of the season. The programme opened with two bracketed items, " Third March in F" and Handel's " Largo/ by the orchestra, and these were rendered in a manner which showed that although only recently formed, the society had made very good progress under the conductorship of Mr. V. K. Lester. A selection from "II Trovatore" was given in a highly-pleas-ing manner, a very even tone being maintained by the instruments throughout, and the crescendo and dimuendo passages being well marked The valse, " 0, Dry those Tears," tvas -treated iri a light and tuneful manner, and a gavotte, " Castagnette," with which the programme concluded, received careful treatment. Songs were rendered by Misses Milford and Ellingham and by Mr. F. Lawson; clarionette solo,, Mr. H. Lester; violin solo, Mr. Allinghani. Humorous recitations by Mr. Herbert obtained repeated encores, and a novel item in the shape of a dance, "The Washerwoman's Jig," received much applause, and was also encored. The entertainment was a decided success in every way, and the Eociety shows itself highly deserving of the interest evinced by local residents.
