In connection with the scheme of the May Queen Company to test the Thames deep levels, instructions have been forwarded to the manager of the Thames Hauraki pump to start forthwith to lift the water from below the present level (650 feet) in the Queen of Beauty shaft.

The annual meeting was held yesterday, and the report and balance sheet (which had been circulated, among the shareholders) were adopted, and Messrs H. H. Partridge and M. Wiseman were re-elected directors, and Mr S. H. Matthews was re-elected auditor.

OLD''HAURAKI.

An extraordinary general meeting of shareholders in the Old Bauralri Gold Mining Company- was held a-t 2 o'clock this afternoon in Mr. B. Gilfillan's office. In the- absence of the Hon. E. Mitchelson Mr. Duncan E. Clark was voted to the chair. The resolutions passed at a previous meeting, voluntarily winding up the company in order to f«-rm a new one and amalgamate with, the New Bunker a Hill Gold Mining Company, were duly confirmed, on the motion of the chairman. *

MINE MANAGERS' HEARTS:

Waiotahi.— Driving east on what appear* to be the N-o. 5 rpef at No., 6 level Bus £en in hand, and is in a distance of 19ft from the crosscut, the reef being now about 2ft«fn width. The winze below this level on the main reef is down a depth of 31ft but so far no gold has been seen. Stoping op the main .α-eef. above, this level is in progress, tlie fifth stope being carried 21ft east of No. 1 winze: This stope Is producing good crushing dirt, and during the Week 191b of picked stone have been selected. As this is a great Improvement on anything yet obtained in these srtopes, the manager is very hopeful of hiving now touched the tail end of the rich run of. gold. Stoping ou the footwall dropper and branch leader is in progress as usual, a fourth stope being s'arted east from No. 1 winze, and aood colours of gold are occasionally seen. Cure reef: The fifth stope west of the rise is being pushed on, the reef being about 2ft In wiSth. >"o. 5 level: Driving west on the main reef is in progress, and is In a distance of 281 ft from the crosscut. As yet the reef has shown no improvement. Stoping on the main reef above this level is in hand as usual, the eighth stope bein" carried 40ft east of No. 1 winze and ■west for a distance of 14ft. The ninth stope has been carried east of No. 1 winze for a distance of 21ft, and during-the week 651b of picked stone have been secured. Work in this stope is now confined to taking oat the reef for its full width, which is being pushed on as vigorously as possible. No. 4 level: Driving on the main reef from- ttie north-east drive is in progress, and is in a distance of 165 ft. Ihe reef in the face is about oft in width, and the 'quartz is of a kindly appearance, but no sold has been seen. , The drive west on the Cure footwall branch is in a distance of 95ft from the_crqsscut, the reef being about 6ta in width. The old drive west from the north crosscut has been cleaned out -and repaired for a distance of 3Tsrt, and the stopes on the main reef above the level continue to produce fair crushing dirt. No. 3 level: In the winze being sunk on the Imperial City reef not a great deal of work has been done during the week, the men being engaged in cutting through the elide to see' what the reef is like on the other side. Golden Belt.—No. 1 level south has been extended. 17ft, the reef maintaining its size and value. Side-stripping operations in this level are still in progress, and a large body of ore Is being opened up. Good progress is being made with the ground tram and new wire tramway. This work will be completed in about sii weeks' time, and when it is finished I hope to be able to keep the battory coins night and day on payable ore. Watchman. —The. level towards the Windfall reef has been extended 16ft. • The country Is a white, blocky sandstone, of a most favourable description. The.joints in the country are now underlying with the same dip as possessed by the reef at the surfa.ce level, which should now be met with. Trafalgar.—The winze on the footwall branch of the Nelson reef has been sunk an additional 6ft, making a total depth of 10ft to date. The reef at' this point carries good mineral indications, but owing to the country being very hard, and. of an unfavourable nature for gold, the reef is poor in quality, but will, I believe, make good ore when a more congenial class of country is met with. On the hangiagwall branch of the Nelson reef, not much driving has been done up to the present time, as we have uad to make a connection with the maia level, pnf timber in position, lay tramlines, etc. The reef in the face of this level is about 3ft in width, being encased in a arstclass sandstone for gold, and we are making good progress. Operations at this point will be can-led on as speedily as possible, as the rfef looks well, and good ore may be obtained at any time as the drive is ex. tended.

Halcyon.—The low level on tie Halcyon reel going east nae been extended 6ft, and tne reef broken down for the week, mating in .all 57ft. Tlje reef Is lft -In - tnicJsijess, carrying good indications for gold, such as bright mineral and eUica, Colours

of gold were-seen while ■"breaking down the reef. The country, is inncn Sner and of a better class for gold. Mineral- seams, tllnties, and quartz stringers are coming In from each wall, and striking into the reel as the drive advances. • The stained mineral water that is now issuing from the face is coming from the winze, which. i s now 33ft from the present t aee.

Bonanza.—The main drive (crosscut) hae been extended a farther distance of Sft, making.a total of 380 ft. Ihere is-nothing fresh to report from this face, in the western drive the face has been extended an additional 10ft, mating a total of 20ft from the starting point. An improvement has taken place in the country during the last day or two, and it is now of a very favourable character. I intend to strip the reef for a few feet before breaking the same down.

Waitangi.—The low level crosscnt has been advanced a total distance of 100 feet from the Siam reef, and 13ft pact the hangingwall portion of the main reef. Not meeting with any more quartz, I started'to drive" to the east on. the hanging wall of the rest, which nas now been stripped, for a distance of 7ft. This work will be con' tinned as far as convenient- before breaking down the reef. In opeuing out on the leader on the west side of the crosscut,-• it was necessary to break out all- the country rock between the leader and the footwall rib of the main reef. This has almost been completed up to where they join, and (fives a stretch of Bft on the leader, and 6ft on the footwall reef. The leader has been taken down for a distance of 6ft, and lSlbs of picked stone selected from it. It does not show gold as freely towards the junction as it did in the crosscut. The June-1 tion should be reached in the early part of I the week, when the remaining portion of the leader, and the footwall rib, will be broken out. Thie work has taken longer than I expected. The west drive on the i Siam reef has been stopped during the week, the men having been engaged in opening out on the leader. Vtovi in this face will he resumed on Monday. Temple Bar. — The reef looks very promising underneath the rise. The drive in the low level has been extended sft for the week on the course of the reef. The reef is a well-defined body of stone about twofeet wide, and when- broken down shows colours of gold, and it is good enough for picked stone at any breaking down. Mining ' **:* Mt. Zeehau. — Tira'T<lrive on Birthday Reef has been advanced a further distance of 6ft. with one shift of men. The reef at present in t.Yig. JAJA-qgJaot looking so well as when reporting last, very little quartz is showing. altfloufHflftAs carrying two welldefined walls, with a mullocky foruiaof ISm in width. lac. manager is in hopes that it will again make at any time. Nothin? further bas heeu done on the West Vein this week, on account of the men having to fix up ttie track to allow further material being got up to the mine. Two men are cutting in on the No. 5 reef and it is a uioe looking ore body 3ft wide, nnrt the stone looks very promising. A large ore body fully Bft iv widtb. has been located North of No. 5. These several ore bodies werp all shown to the chairman of directors on their visit to the mine.
