CHEISTCHURCH, this day.

Mr. H. Quane, chairman of the Midland Railway Committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, has received a telegram signed by Messrs. C. M. Gray, G. Witty and T. H. Davey, M-ILB-'s, stating that the Government has acecpted a tender for the Arthur's Pass tunnel on the Midland Railway, at a price under £ 600,000; according to the specifications the tunnel will be 17 feet high, 15 feet wide, and 5 miles 25 chains. 12 feet in length. It will be lined throughout. The Government engineer's estimate of th<? cost was £ 534,000. The conditions provided axe alternative tenders for completion in four years or in five y ears.
