OWING TO THE SPY. PREPARING TO DEFEND THEMSELVES. (By CaWe.—Press Association.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, July 13. The Japanese arrested at San Diego said he was an officer.
The papers found in his possession included a plan of everything that would be .useful in the event of an attack on the Pacific coast, including the mine field of the harbour.
A Japanese servant was also arrested for having prints in his possession. There is intense feeling at Sin Diego, and the Japanese quarters are threatened.
Thousands of Japanese labourers employed on the railways and lemon groves are pouring into the city to resist the populace in the event of an attack.
The newspapers at San Francisco state that marines stationed at Vallejo (about thirty miles north-east of San Francisco) threaten to expel the Japanese from the town.
[San Diego is a seaport and capital of San Diego County, California. It has one of the best harbours on the Pacific coast; is on the Southern California Railroad, and is a winter health resort. The population is probably by this year close on 30,000.]
