BULLKR UXIOX DEFEATED. AUCEXAND WINS BY SEVEN TRIES TO XTL. The first representative football mite'a oi tie present season, the challenge match by the Builer Union for the Ranfurly Shield, now held by Auckland, nas played at Alexandra Park on Saturday afternoon The ground was sioppy and the ball heavy and greasy, as the result of continued rain. Showers -were experienced through the day. right up to the commencement oi the match, but j during the play the raia held off. It was j generally expected that Auckland would j win, and the match did not excite a great amount of interest, the attendance being between 3000 and 4000. Hall and McDonald came through the line out and took play into the visitors' half, a good kick by "Twinam c improving the position. Doncliff was in charge of a rush which took play to the Auckland 25, but Haywood relieved with a counter dribble and the Bulier full-back found the line in his own territory. Here Kiernan, Wynyard", Magee and Twiname were associated in a run from which the latter centred, Hayward followed up, but H-ill got there first and forced. Trewarthen and Hall, the latter doing especially tine work, carried the ball to visitors' line where a free kick was awarded. Wynyard marked and Kiernan following- up smartly forced the full-back to carry out on the line.
