LIBERAL AND LABOUB FEDEHATION. The monthly meeting of the Grey Lynn branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation was held on Thursday, Mr "W. S. Smith presiding over a large attendance. It was decided that, as the boundary of the Grey Lynn had been considerably extended on the Mount Eden side, the offices of the registrar of electors should be moved to a more central position, and the Government be urged to effect a change in the above direction. The secretary was instructed to write to the Grey Lynn Borough Council, requesting them to urge the Tram-way Cwnpany to give the residents of Great North-road a. more efficient service. It was .decided that at the nest meeting the tariff question (particularly the duty, on necessaries of life) should be discussed, the meeting to be open to the pnblic. , T-he second" annual meeting of the Newmarket branch of the Liberal and Labour I Federation' of New Zealand vras held on Wednesday night. Ml - . J. S. Dickson presided over a large number of members. Tne secretary was instructed to write to th; Premier congratulating him on his sate return, and to the Hon. Mr. Hall-Jones, sympathising with him in his illness. A letter of condolence was also ordered to be seat to the relatives of the late Sir John Hall.. Very strong exception was taken by members, a number of whom are working on the line, to remarks made by Mr. Finlayson at the Chamber of Commerce dinner re the duplication .works, it was pointed out that the men are working in very difficult country. It was decided to discuss the question of rating on unimproved values m Newmarket at the nest -meeting, and Mr. F. M. King will be invited to address the ■members on the subject. The night of meeting was altered to the third Tuesday in the month. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. J. S. IHckson (re-elected); treasurer, Mr. J. Wilson (re-elected; secretary, M.r. T. J. Watts (re-elected); committee, Messrs. A. Smith, J. Porter (re-elected), D. J. Round, G. AleKnight, X- A. Handcock, O. C. PJrte, and W. Harris. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers and" "Vonrmlttee. Mr. J. L. McCoU briefly lisponded- It was decided to leave all arraafsements for the annual concert in the htnds of the executive. ST. MATTHEW'S MOTHERS' .UNION. The annual social meeting in connection with St. Matthew's Mothers' Union took place on Thursday, the gathering being largely attended, and a very successful one. During the evening an address was. delivered by. Mrs Neligan. PACIFIC CLUB "AT HOME."' An "at home"' in the Pacific Club on Thursday night was well , attended, about 300 being present. Items were contributed during the evening by Miss Sosa Blasted, Miss Grace Lainboume, • ■ Miss Millie Peak, and Messrs Snowden end M. Orchard. The first scene from "Aβ You Like it" was given by Mr K. McVeagh (Orlando), Miss Brnce (Bosalind), and Miss Grace Buller (Celia). The grave scene from "Hamlet" ivas given by Mr R. McVeagh (the Prince), Mr W- W. Bruce (First Grave Digger), Rev. W. Beatty (Second Grave Digger), and Mr A. S. C. Brown (Hocatlo). The guests •were also entertained to supper. Mr W. J. Speight, President of the Cln-b, occupied the chair. On the motion of Mi C. Calder a vote of thanks was accorded to all who contributed to the evening's enjoyment. PTJKEKOHE MOUNTED RIFLES. The Puketohe Mounted Rifles held their animal emofcer on Tuesday evening at Grahame's Pukekohe Hotel. There was a ' numerous attendance, and Major Wyuyard presided. Prizes won at the regimental rifle meeting .were presented as follows:— | Trooper D. K. Clark, Wiseman's challenge belt and gold medal, for champion shot. First Regiment A.M. Rifles. Trooper Clark, i also won Winchester rifle presented by Colonial Ammunition Co. Trooper Smeed secured a handsome tobacco jar for winiDg ! match 1. Class B. During the proceedings | two presentations were made to retiring ; members of the corps. Lieut. A. G. Glasson was the recipient of an excellent shaving outfit, suitably inscribed, while SergeantMajor Crispe was rewarded for his general 6ervices with a silver teapot of nnique design. Several addresses were given by officers present, and several toasts were honoured. "The Squadron," proposed" by Major Wyny-ard, responded to by Lieut. Nathan; "The Visitors," proposed by Lient. Nathan, responded to heartily by company. The mnsical.portion of the evening's entertainment was entertaining, and several good items were rendered, the contributors being Messrs S. Smith, Andrews, Roberts, Quar-termaster-Sergt. Wright, Dr. Reekie, D. C. Ingram, and Lieut. Nathan. Captain Tapper presided at the piano. Major Wynysrd announced that the valuable cup presented to the Mounted Scouts competition by Lieut Nathan, had been won by Sergt. Scliofield, of the Corps.
