THE COLONY'S UNIONS.
ABOUT 38,000 PERSONS ORGANISED. (By Telegrapn.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WEIAINGTON, Friday. It is interesting ta note from a return presented to Parliament this afternoon that there are 'in- the colony at the present time 274 unions "of workers, with 34,978 members, and ID9I unions of employers with" 3337 members. Fifteen employers? unions and 13 workers' unions have failed to send in the annual rev urns and will -consequently be canceiled. The existing unions are distributed throughout the colony as follows: —Workers—Auckland district, 56 unions; 7929 members; Wellington district, 63, unions, 9311 members; Canterbury dis: trict, 65 unions, 7479 members; Otago and Sohthland : 59 unions, 6884 members; Taranaki district, five-unions, 202 members; Marlborough district, three unions, 164 members; Nelson district,. 13 unions, 2559 members. Unions of employers—Auckland district,. 27 unions, 613 members; "Wellington district, 25 unions, 526 members; Canterbury district, 24 unions, 1218 members; Otago and Southland districts, 24 unions, 846 members; Taranaki district, three unions, 48 members; Marlborough district, two unions, 40 members; Nelson district, one union, 19 members; Westland district, three unions, 27 members. The Waihi Amalgamated Miners' and Workers' Union easily tops the record ( with the largest- number of members (1187.),- but the Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants comes a good second with 1010, the Otago branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Workers' being third, with 945, and the Wellington Drivers' Union fourth, with 837. Of the employers' Unions the Canterbury Shipowners' comes first, with" 414, and there are twenty unions which have only one I member.
