BOWING

This week's mail from Sydney brought a letter from the Wanganui sculler, Webb, who is now training on the Parramatta River for his match against C. Towns on 3rd August for the championship of the world. The letter indicates that Jvew Zealand's champion sculleT is in the best of health, and that his training operations at the time of writing were vigorously proceeding. Webb has made his headquarters at Abbottsford, nearly opposite George Towns' boatbuilding establishment at Gladesville, about eight miles from Sydney, and is evidently (very lcomSor.tably fcituated. His weight is now list 81b, as against lOst 71b when he rowed Stanbury on the Wanganui River last Boxing Day, this increase of avoidupois indicating still further muscular development. He and Barnett (trainer) witnessed the match Tressider v. Thoroughgood for the Australian championship, and both tipped the former as the winner, their" con<susions being borne out by the result, although Tressider is reporteS to have T?bn by only a half a lengtn. At a meeting of St. George's Rowing Club on Wednesday, it was decided to abandon the annual dinner, and to present the trophies won during the season at an "at home," to be held on Friday evening, August 2nd, in the Royal Albert Hall. Every endeavour is being made by the committee to make the function a huge success. Dancing will be indulged in during the greaterpart of the evening. The Auckland Bowing Club has decided to hold its annual meeting on Wednesday, August 28th. —————— —__
