The owners of coastal vessels trading out of Auckland are arranging for an increase of freight rates in consequence, they say, of the demands the shipping laws make on them. It is felt that freight cannot be carried at the present rates except at a loss. The Collector of Customs has been advised by the Marine Department that the Governor has declared it to be unlawful to take oysters after the 11th inst. from Motutapu and Bakino Islands and adjacent rocks. The Croatians residing in the Auckland diocese have subscribed the sum of £63 to cover the cost of the Calvary group erected above the High Altar in St. Patrick's Cathedral. The group, •which has been greatly admired, cost £60. A movement is now on foot to raise £300 among the Croatian residents for the Auckland Eospital.
