COREA AND JAPAN.

Tile Question of Status. (Received 9.11 a.m.) THE HAGUE, July 8. The Corean deputation to the Peace Convention failed to obtain the admission for which they had applied for on the ground of Corea's political independence.

Replying to the Marquis Ito's interrogation, the Emperor of Corea repudiated the deputation, declaring that its credentials were forgeries. But it is reported that the Emperor paid the expenses of the delegates from his private estate.

[Three Japanese-Corean treaties have had the effect of giving Japan far more than the- paramount interests in Corea guaranteed her by the Russo-Japanese and Anglo-Japanese treaties. In the first of the former, signed at Seoul on February 23, 1904, : the Japanese undertook to ensure the safety of the Corean Imperial House, and guaranteed the independence and territorial integrity of the country, while the Corean Government, placing full confidence in the Japanese Government, was to adopt Japanese advice with respect to administrative improvements. Under the second agreement, signed August 22. 1904, the Corean Government accepted a Japanese 1 financial adviser and a foreign diplomatic adviser for the department of foreign affairs, and agreed to consult the Japanese Government on all questions arising out of dealings with foreigners. The third treaty, signed November 17, 1905, with unmistakeable directness placed the whole of the foreign affairs of Corea under the direct administrative control of Japan. Thus Corea's existence as a nation, so far as diplomatic recognition goes, has altogether ceased, and even her consuls are now identical with the consuls for Japan.] .
