OUTBREAK OF TYPHOID.

RAWENE HOSPITAL FILLED. In connection with the outbreak of typhoid fever at Rawene, Mr. C. C. Winsta'nley, Health Inspector, has visited the pla-ce, where he found the hospital quite filled with fever patients; in fact, it is impossible for the hospital to receive any surgical or ot_er outside cases, until danger of infection is past. Most of the patients have been brought from the native settlement at Omanaia, where they had been placed in one shed, prior to removal, without treatment or sanitary precautions. Two supplementary nurses from Auckland are assisting the matron, and the housemaid and one probationary, together with the local constable, are among those affected with the disease. Early alterations are required in the sanitary conditions of many native settlements where the conditions conduce to an extensive dissemination of the epidemic. It is considered that an immediate and thorough inspection should be made of many "of the native settlements, and Maoris from these places are in the habit of mingling freely with people in townships, courthouses, and other public places. Mr. Vaughan, chairman of the Hokianga County Council, when in Wellington, will urge the ; erection of a new and larger hospital at Rawene. It is thought that the disease has been checked in the vicinity of Rawene, and no fatalities are expected among those already in the hospital. Dr. Purdy, who has been prosecuting inquiries, will most likely leave Whangarei, with Dr. Winstanley, to-morrow for Dargaville.
