A pitiful case -was brought under the notice of the police at Ly&elton on Wednesday morning.. On the arrival oi the_ steamer Mokoia from Dunedin the police -were sent for and -were iniormed that during" the night one of the passengers—a single girl 16 years of agehad given girth to a fully developed female child. There -was no medical man on board the steamer, bui the girl was attended to by two stewardesses and a lady passenger. Everything possible was done for the girl and the infant, hut the latter died in the morning , , shortly before the vessel reached Lyttelton. The girl herself was in a bad state, and immediately the steamer reached port Dt. Newell was sent for and he had the mother taken ashore to a nursing home. At an inquest on the child a verdict was returned to the effect "that death was due to congenital ■weakness. It was stated that the mother came from Port Chalmers, where the father also lived.
