SOUTHERN NEWS.

(By Telegraph Press Association.) SLY-GROG SELLING. INVERCARGILL, Monday. At the Police Court, to-day, Martin Campbell pleaded guilty to sly grog-sell-ing at Gladstone, in a no-license district. Mr. McCarthy imposed a fine of £40, with costs, to be paid by instalments of £5 per month. The Police Court, continuing its sitting to-night, convicted Frank Coutts, manager aud part owner of Whittingham's brewery depot, of having sold beer on June 10. Accused was fined £50, with costs A: 2 0/, or in default one month's hard labour. A charge against the same accused of having sold liquor on unauthorised premises was withdrawn. For exposing liquor for sale, he was convicted and discharged, and security for appeal was fixed at £75.

SUDDEN DEATH.

DUNEDIN, Z\londay. Mr. George Kidd Miller, a widower, who lived at Saddle Hill, died in his house yesterday. He complained of cold when he got up, and decided not to go to church for fear of disturbing peopls with his cough. Alter breakfast he had a. slight attack of vomiting, but was all right at 10.30. An hour later his son went into the dining room and found him dead in his chair.

FIRE AT MANGAWEKA-

WELLINGTON, Monday. The fire which occurred at Mangaweka this morning resulted in the tot?l destruction of the premises of J. Johnston -(merchant).-.Bennett (saddler), an Zimmerman (blacksmith and wheelwright). Nothing from any of the places was ° saved. The fire started at the rear of Bennett's shop. Munro's new buildings on the opposite side of the road were much damaged. The insurances known amount to £ 1600.
