BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Birkenhead Borough I'onncil met on Friday evening in the chainbcrs at Birkenhoaid. The Mayor (Mr Alex. Keves) and the Jol- ' lowing councillors were present: — "Messrs T. lladtield, W. Wallace. J. G. Kay. I". G. Skeates, 1". Souster, F. A. Pitt, and T. Clements. Noithooto Gas Comtiany.—Tn reply to a complaint from tbe ConncU, the see-retary of tlie Nor'the-ote Ucis Company stated that it -was impossible to regulate the lighting of the street lamps owing to some person or persons inrerfering with the mantles and the sockets attached, the clockwork gear being also put out of action. It wns decided "to offer a reward of £5 for tlie conviction of the offenders, provided that the Gas Company contribute the sum of £TI. It was also agreed that tlie local e:onstab!e be written rospecting this matter. New Itoad.—Mr Place forwcnW a letter, asking that a road be formed to his property at Birkdale, near Creek-road.— Referred to the Works Committee. I'.rasscy-road.—Mr T. A. llonghton wrote on behalf of the property owners in this road, asking tbat the roadway be formed. lie also stated that summonses had been issued to owners by the noxious weeds inspector. —On the motion of ihe Mayor it was resolved -to take over the road on presentation of tbe deed of delegation ami the sum of £10, as promised. Tlie inspector is to be informed In the meantime tbat the residents are clearing the road of ferae. Rates.—The Mayor moved that rates for tbe ensuing year be struck as follows: General rate. 1/4 iv the £ (including lighting, etc.): hospital and charitable aid, 2d: No. 1 loan. _: No. 2 loan. 4d, thus making a total or 21 in the> £. P.s. Takapuna.—Mr K. .Tohnstone. chairman of the Ferry Committee, forwarded a communication, stating that the present year's license of the ferry steamer Takapuna (employed on tho Birkenhead and Northcote service) was about to expire, and asked for the co-operation of the Council to oppose tbe renewal of tbe license, of this vessel for passenger traffic.-.—On the motion of Cr. Skeates, the town clerk "."as instructed to write to the Auckland Harbour Board in terms of Mr Johnstone's letter.
Sanitary Inspection.—Mr Metcalf present eel the report of hts honso-to-house inspection, with the result that lie found tTre district in a very satisfactory state. —It was resolveel that the Health Department be furnished with a copy of the report. Accounts totalling £49 2,10 were passed for payment.
