THE SALT WATER BATHS.

PROTEST AGAINST CLOSING. At the meeting of the City Council last night a deputation of ladies' and gentlemen, headed by Mr- T. Gresham, waited on the Council with reference to the Auckland Salt Water Baths.. _.lr. Gr_s____i, in introducing tha subject-, said that the Salt Water'_3_.t_L_ had been established for over a-quarter of a century, and had betrome one of the rights and privileges of the citizens of Auckland, especially those residing in the heart of the. cry. Excluding season ticket holders, the attendance year ■was nearly 14-000 bathers. They understood that it was intended to close these salt water baths when others in the neighbourhood of Shelly Beach had been erect--- Though bajths at Ponsonby and Parnell were desirable, they asked that these baths should be retained, though they might not be -as good as could be -rished. In the interests oi the dwellers in the central parts of the city, they asked that the salt water bails should not be closed down.

After other speakers had emphasized ftheir views, his Worship said that tie matter had engaged tie serious consideration of the Council, who hoped shortly io erect baths in Ponsonby. In their estimates £500 was allocated for the improvement oi tbe Albert-street Baths.
