A CAMBRIDGE SENSATION.

ALLEGED ATTEMFTED S UICIDB- ! FIERCE STRUGGLE FOR A RAZOR. (By Telegra_ph.—Own Correspondent.) CAMBRIDGE, this day. A sensation was caused here last evening. People wondered why the street lamps had not been lighted as usual. Upon making inquiries they found that the lamplighter had been locked up, charsed with having attempted to commit suicide, and with wounding James McLellan, his brother-in-law, with a razor. The accused is a young man, about 24 years of a"c. named Jerome Furlong. He had only lately come to Cambridge, and was reputed to have made an attempt on his life in Auckland a few months ago. It appears that a girl had refused to walk out with Furlond, whereupon, it is alleged, he said he would soon settle the matter. He went into a bedroom in his brother-in-law's house, where he resided, got a razor, and, it is alleged, attempted to cut his own throat. MeLonnan states that he knocked up his hand, and a desperate struggle for possession of the razor ensued. MeLennan got the worst of the struggle for some time, and then he got a " knock-out" blow in on Furlong. Neighbours eventually came to his assistance, and when the police arrived they found Furlong bound in a chair. They handcuffed tbe man, and removed him to the lock-up. Dr. Roberts attended to both men. He had to stitch up MeLennan's hands and wrists in several places.

Furlong was not much injured, but he had to be plastered up.

Accused appears to be of a theatrical turn of mind. He and other newcomers weTe trying to get up a play, entitled " The Outlaws." He was brought up in Court this moraing, and remanded for eight days.
