MINISTERS' MOVEMENTS.
' ! HON. G. FOWLDS. The Hon. George Fowlds, Minister for Education and Public Health, arrived by the s.s. Pateena this morning from , Wellington, accompanied by Mr Crowe, private secretary. The Minister came on |to town by train and went at once to the : Customs Buildings, where he was waited upon by a representative of the Auckland ! "Star." HEALTH PRECAUTIONS. Regarding the recent action of tie | I Health Department, in connection with ' j two cases of acute septicaemia, the . : Minister said, "I am very pleased that i i Auckland has escaped •with only two ; , cases. I consider that shows the advan- ; tage of possessing a Health Department I the officials of which can take prompt j action to so effectively cheek the spread iof dangerous diseases. In such cases, I | consider it is a distinct advantage that I the officers of tbe Department are noi | subject to local infkleaec. because it en- ' ables them to act with, greater autoority j and promptitude than might be possible ! |if they were under local control."' | GREAT NORTH ROAD DEVIATION, j I "I notice that the deviation of the ] : Great North-road is now well under way. j lls there any chance of the Government j i assisting to still further continue that | | important work towards the Mental Hos- I pita!':'' was the next question asked. -'Oh, I hope it will be continued," said j Jibe Minister, "and I think if the loca; I bodies interested will signify their wil- | j lingness to take their share of the ex- j i penditure involved, that the Government 'will most likely make a grant in aid of | the extension. You see, the Government j has such a valuable property out there in I the shape of the Mental Hospital that I | there is a certain claim for assistance |by grant, as it pays no rates. Then, too, | I the fact that it is also the road to the ] I Infectious Diseases Hospital renders it | j necessary to improve it where possible." : j Mr Fowlds will attend the dinner at j . the Pacific Club to-night, and on Monday | visjt? Helensville to open the new j I baths. ! 1 I-- - ■
