THE SANITARY SERVICE.

CTo the Editor.) Sir,—The manager- of the present insanitary sanitary system assures mc, on my complaining to him re the following occurrence, that it is with the present Council's knowledge and sanction that the methods now in vogue are allowed. Pans belonging to different houses are emptied into each other, and swilled out from yard taps or any convenient water and replaced. In my case it was swilled out with water from the cesspit of yard drain, the liquid being then poured in a corner of the yard, and dirt thrown over it? Is this sort of business going on all over Ponsonby wherever there is no. water service for w.c's? The Sanitary Co. say the present arrangement is .a pro tern, one; there are no spare pans; what they have are not much good, and it won't pay the company to go in for more till the Council decide what they mean to do. We have a legion, of inspectors now-a-days who cavil at a stray piece of cabbage leaf, and yet such things as above are allowed. If it's a case of £ s. d. let us have no Town Hall folly, but spend the cash on getting th* sewerage of the city in proper conttition first. —I am, etc-, C. PEEK.
