WANGANUI, this day. Henry Barnard Tomlinson, who mysteriously disappeared from Petone in January last, was arrested in Wanganui on Saturday, and charged at the Court this morning with theft of money belonging to the Temperance and General Life Assurance Society. Accused, who, it is alleged, has been living here under the name of Lindsay, was remanded to Wellington.

INQUEST "ON A CHILD.

WELLINGTON, this day. At the inquiry into the death of a five-year-old daughter of George Pettitt evidence showed that the child was playing on a vacant section. Some paper and rubbish were ignited at the foot of a small bank, and the girl, who "was standing just above, saw that her dress was on fire. She ran home, screamin", and her mother extinguished the flames'; but the child's body was terribly burned and she died from shock seven hours later. A verdict of "Death from shock caused by burns, accidentally inflicted," was returned.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT HASTINGS.

HASTINGS, this day. A young man named Frederick Butcher, when gathering cones from a pine tree on Saturday, slipped, and, falling on top of a sustained two broken wrists, a broken leg, a broken jaw, and nose. He was conveyed to the hospital in a serious condition.

NAPIER, this day. Owing to lack of interest in rowing circles it has been decided to abandon the proposed regetta at Easter, although promises of support were received, many from outside clubs. Fire on Saturday night practically gutted a six-roomed dwelling in Garlylestreet owned and occupied by Mrs Campbell. There was no one in the house at the time. In his address to the Grand Jury at the opening of the Supreme Court to-day, Mr. Justice Chapman said the number of charges (twenty) was unduly large for a district of this size, and compared unfavourably with some other parts of the colony he had lately visited. A brass tablet has been placed in. the Christchurch Cathedral in memory of the late Captain Hutton, Curator oi the Christchurch Museum, who died at sea in October last. Several of the visiting firemen who did not behave well will be dealt with, in "sultry manner," was an expression used to-day by the president of the Fire Brigades' Conference.
