WELLINGTON, this day.
It might interest those who are concerned in the agitation for suppression of the betting evil in this colony to knot, from Mr. Joseph Garrard, an ex-Minister of New South Wales, now visiting New Zealand, that the Gaming Act passed Dj; the Carruther Government has already worked wonders. Some of the streets which were a nuisance to ordinary passers-by owing to the gambling fraternity are'now clear, and it is safe, if not a pleasure, to walk where before it wa3 a danger. Besides it has suppressed tha gambling of the people in the huiniler walks of life, who frequently spent, not only their own but other people's money for the chance of a possible gain. The moral effect upon the community is invaluable.
