MOUNT EDEN BOROUGH.

(To the Editor.) Sir.—The statements of Mr Nicholson, ex-chairman of the Mount Eden Road Board, to the Hon. George Fowlds, as reported in your issue -of to-night, are very -materially incorrect. There has not at any time been, as stated by Mr Nicholson, any intimations made by the Board or by the clerk to the chairman of our A ssocriation, or any communications between the Board and the chairman. aJI cam-ni'unica.tdoTis having 'b?eu with myself as lion, secretary. The letter referred to> as having been sent by the clerk was posted to myself, and received by mc on Wednesday afternoon, after our deputation had •waited on Mr Fawlds. Prior to this we had received no reply from the Board or the clerk to any of our letters. All we have desired to ask is that facilities should be givcu for persons possessing the qualifications lor electors under the extended franchise, and the wives of such persons, independently of the question of ■which party they support, to be placed on the electors' roll without imposing on them any unnecessary inconvenience. The Municipal Corporations Act, 1900, sub-section 3 of section 13, provides that "It shall be the duty of the clerk to enter on the- district electors' list the name of every person who to the clerk's knowledge possesses any qualification entitling him to bs entered thereon." In your report you state that Mr Nicholson says: "In any case the law required the signing of # the claim for enrolment." This is not consistent ■with the mandatory directions imposed on the clerk by the afoove-nientioned clause of the Act. If the provisions of this clause are complied with we need have m> fear of the result of the elections. —I aan, etc.,

DAVID METKLE, H-on. fc-eeretary _t_t_ Eden Ratepayers' Association. August IG, 1900.
