MEETINGS & ENTERTAINMENTS.

■■ ' m PREfSBYTERIAN CITY MISSIOX. The annnal meeting of the Presbyterian City Mission was held iv St. James' Hail last evening, when there waa a large attendance. The Rev. J. B. Russell. M-A., presided. The report and balance-sheet, as previously published in the '*Star," were read and adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, the Rev. A. Macaulay Caldwell; treasurer, Mr M. A. Clark; missioner, Mr D. McPherson; secretary, Mr R. J. Entrican. Mrs Black and Miss Rimmcr .contributed vocal solos, and the audience sang a number of hymns. Refreshments -were dispensed during the evening. VOLUNTEER BALL. The No. 0 Company of Garrison Artillery Volunteers gave their ninth annuafball in the Federal hall last evenin..- The function was in every way ] successful and enjoyable. The guests of the company included a number of the officers' of other companies. Extensive decorations of flags, palms, festoon- of greenery and Chinese lanterns, which were carried

Merediths band discoursed excellent dance music, and in the adjoining room an ample supper was served. The M.C.'s duties were capably discharged by Sergeant Biekerton. Sergeant. Booker, Corporal Bickerton. -and Gunner V. Little. A.O.K. SOCIAL. The anniversary social of Court Birkenhead, A.0.F.. was held in their .hall last evening, and proved an unqualified success. There vras a large gathering of members and friends, who evidently appreciated the. items provided for the evening. The following contributed items:— Misses Kelly, K. Thompson, Ella Wallace, Milly Heron: Messrs -1. Brook. M. G. King. 1). Heron, and W. McLean. AUCKLAND SAILORS' HOME. sA meeting of the Couneii of the Auckland Sailors' Home was held last evening in the Home buildings. Mi- Pcakcpresident. occupied the chair. The late-Captain Anderson.—Prior to the ordinary business the chairman referred to the loss sustained by the death of the late Captain Anderson. He said that the deceased was one of the founders of the Home, and for many years a trustee, and was always actuated by honest and kindly motives and a desire to serve tbe best interests of the institution a.nd its inmates. He moved that ti letter of sympathy and condolence be sent to the widow and family. This was carried in silence, the members standing. Finance. —The house account disclosed a profit for the past month of £5 2/10. Mission Work. —The chairman reported that the Miss-ion Hall meetings and chirrch services had been well attended and successfully conducted. Mr Marshall, who had* been appointed by Bishop Ncligan ou behalf of the Missions to Seamen Society. London, to carry out. mission work among seamen here, had called upon him. He was of opinion, that Mr Marshall would prove to be eminently fitted for the work, and prove an influence for good among t<e seamen coming into the port. A communication was received from Mr Marshall explaining the lines on which be intended to carry out his work, and asking for full control of the. mission hall. It was decided to inform Mr Marshall that the articles of association would not permit of the full control of the hall being handed to anyone outside the Council, but that it, would gladlyl be placed at his. disposal on such nights as it wns available, the arrangements to be made with the, mission committee. C OMPLLMENTARY CONCERT. A complimentary benefit concert was tendered Inst night at the Royal Albert Hall to ''Billy*' Murphy, tbe ex-cham-pion feather-weight pugilist of the world, by P. Quintan's concert company and the Auckland Amateur Boxing Club. An excellent programme was provided. Miss Kate Maher. Mr. .1. Quirk, tho Misses Murray, and Master .7. Quinlan sang songs which were thoroughly enjoyed. Mr. Harry Cumberland conducted some clever sleight-of-hand tricks, and succeeded in mystifying his audience, for which he. was warmly applauded. Some coon impersonations and whistling solos by Mr. Aubrey Douglas proved an enjoyable item. Quinlan's orchestra provided music, and at the conclusion of the concert all joined in tripping the light fantastic until a late hour.

CONCERT AT MT. ROSKILL. An entertainment was he.ld in the Jilt. Roskill school last night to defray the expenses incurred by a parent who.se boy bad accidentally been hurt in the playground some time ago. The School Committee, as promoters of the affair, provided si varied programme, and had the pleasure of seeing a crowded attendance. The various items of the programme rendered afforded an excellent evening's amusement. Songs were contributed by .Miss Moss, Miss Moore, Miss Gregory, Mrs. Ekman, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Barlow, and Messrs. R. Love, Moss, McDermott, Maekay and Howell. Mr. G. Kcesing aJso contributed items, and a Highland fling by Miss Andrews was an appreciated item. The Onehunga orchestra were also in attendance, and added to the enjoyment of the evening.

INDEPENDENT ORDER OF GOOD TEMPLARS DISTRICT LODGE MEETING. The quarterly session of the district lodge was held on Wednesday in *the Foresters' Hall, Devonport. D.C.T. Bro. P.earec was in tho chair, and all district officers and delegates from subordinate lodges were in attendance. The district secretary's quarterly report was read and unanimously adopted. The district visiting officers reports on the various subordinate lodges were read, and showed that all lodges with one exception are rapidly increasing their membership. The total number initiated into the order during tbe last quarter was 140. The Saturday night entertainments in the Foresters' Hall, Newton, under the direction of the district exc.-ntive are already proving a valuable aid to the order. ance if required. The district funds are in a healthy state. On the recommenda- I tion of the secretary the sum of £3 3/was voted to the G_L_ aggressive fund. Notice of motion was given by the Star of Devonport Lodge "that the number of delegates from the subordinate lodges be altered." Ten candidates for the District degree membership were initiated. The Star of Devonport Lodge provided re- s freshments, which were heartily partaken I of. A vote of thanks to the entertainin*' ! ledge waa passed. J LABOUR DAY DEMOXSTRATIOX. The fortnightly meeting of the Labour ■ Day Celebration Committee was held at ' tile Tailoresses' Hall on Thursday even- i ing. The president, Mr. W. H. Brookes, ' was in the chair. The secretary (Mr. i G. Davis) read correspondence from the Colonial Secretary granting permission for an art union; from the City Council, granting use of the Doinam for Labour Day; from the Colonial Secretary, . stating that no totalisator permits would be granted for Labour Day. The secre- ' tary announced that 27 unions had already sent delegates ,to the committee, and that this was the largest union representation at any celebration. Various committees were appointed to .supervise the sports, the procession, and other matters in connection with the day's outing. A large programme of sporting events has been adopted, and will be advertised on Saturday next so as to enable the prospective competition to get into training. The art union prizes were fixed to the value of £ 100. It wars decided to ntrcept the Brett Printing Company's tender for printing 20,000 tickets. The committeemen are working most enthusiastically to make the day a financial success.
