. THA3VIES> this.day. News has been received of the death, as the result of an explosion, of Charles. Herivel, late, of Thames, who proceeded to West Australia five year* ago. Dewas engaged in mining at Murehi--son, and "it is believed his death was due a premature explosion of a charge of gelignite. His age was 31 years. His mother resides at the Thames. All preliminaries in connection with the erection of the Taupo-Totara Co. ; s wharf at Kopu are completed. An Order-in-Council is now awaited. Strong opposition is shown on the goldiie.ld to the suggestion of the Otago Univeisity Senate that the Thames underground { period.for candidates for mine managers' ! certificates should be one year. These proposals are ridiculed by practical men.The.;steamer Squall is at ELopu landing a cargo of produce for Messrs T. and H.
