ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Th© usual fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga . Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when there were present: Crs. John Rowe {Mayor), Blyth. Moody, Hutchison, Barr, Morton, sear., "Osborne, Williams, Skinner and Colledge. Accounts.—Accounts to ' the amount of £151 were passed for payment. Correspondence.—Mr. J. R. Lundon wrote stating that ho was proceeding to Wellington to participate in the funeral or the late Premier, and asking that the : inquiry into the charges made by his client, the sexton of Waikaraka Cemetery, be postponed until his return. Cr. Williams moved " That no further action be taken in this matter." This was seconded by Cr. Moody and carried, the chairman also expressing himself in accord with the resolution. A request that the Council affiliate with the Municipal Association was referred to the committee for consideration. John Pitt complained of the dangerous state of the footpath at the intersection of Arthur and Victoria streets. Referred to the Streets Committee. A. S. Holme* forwarded the Maugcre Road Board"s appreciation of the Council's decision to allow stock to be driven up Queenstreet as far as Princes-street. J. F. Colledge wrote objecting to the Masons tipping scoria on the reserve he had leased from the Council; when lie locked the'sate in an endeavour to keep them out, it was broken open. "The matter was referred to the committee for consideration.

It was decided to metal Mount- Smartroad. Church-street, and Queen-street from ■the •Royal Oak corner to the wharf.

Onehunga Water Supply.—Cr. Warren Blyth said they had a big overdraft, chiefly in connection with the water supply. It seemed to him unfair that this amonnt should be paid out of the rates. He would prefer to see a loan negotiated at 4h per cent, with a sinking fund of 1* per cent, with a view to liquidation. The present water scheme was not permanent enough for a growing locality such as Onehunga. Another matter deserving of immediate consideration was that of drainage round the springs, whence came their water supply. A local medical man had informed him that unless this was remedied the possibilities of a typhoid fever outbreak would be considerable. The Mayor said that plans and specilications for the drainage of the borough lay in tho office. The estimated cost of the work was £25.000, and that of a new water supply £12,000, making a total expenditure of £37,000. The drainage system it was proposed to carry out in £10,000 blocks, one block each year, until its completion. The .work would possibly have been under way by this time had the Government been able to advance the money. Cr. Blyth said he did not contemplate such an expenditure when he mentioned the necessity for drainage round asked that arrears of money owine to the Council should be placed on the table for next meeting. The Mayor suggested also a statement of the amount 2 ?S B Sar^nS M tiTcT we're ah-cady'paying £00 interest :o* an Overdraft, and £60, «raUl be very well spent on the borough footpaths.
