THE 'FRISCO MAIL SERVICE.

TtIMPORARILY SUSPENDED.

MAIifiipROBABLY FORWARDED VIA v v__nc6tjvi_r. ?: P>

KATLROAD SERVICES INTACT.

9.41 a.m:)

S_T)NEY, this day. A cable received from J. D. Spreckles and Co., stating that the R.M.s. Sonoma, which was to have left San Francisco last Thursday, will miss one trip, and advising the agents to take passengers and cargo by the R.M.S. Sierra, which leaves Sydney on Monday next, as usual. The cable adds that the railway connection from 'Frisco is intact. , .

Messrs Henffer3on ahd Maefaflane, the local agents of the Oceanic Steamsl "P 'o°f have received the following cable from the head office, San Francisco: —"Notify Government sailings temporarily suspended; accept cargo and passengers homeward Sierra; can care for them properly; railroad connections inSpreckels:" This is interpreted to mean that the B.M.s. Sonoma, now in San Francisco, and due to leave- there on Thursday last, will not sail for some little time, and other arrangements will have to be made for carrying on the mail service in the meanwhile. In all probability the mail which was due to leave last week will be sent along the coast railway to Vancouver, where it will be shipped by the Canadian-Australian route to Sydney, the New Zealand portion being conveyed across the Tasman Sea by the ordinary weekly steamers.

: The Auckland agents for the Oceanic S;S. Co. state that they think the only trip suspended will be that of the Sonoma, which was to have left San Francisco last Thursday. It is expected that the Sierra will leave San Francisco for Auckland and Sydney on May 10 next, her correct time-table date.

\ The Sierra, which" leaves Sydney next j Monday, and Auckland on Friday week, I will take passengers for the Californian ■ port, and mails will go forward as usual, the overland routo to New York being J fully available. i The next Vancouver mail steamer will be the s.h. Moana, leaving the Canadian ' port on Friday next, 27th inst., and being duo in Sydney on May 22. Her mails . will leave Sydney for Auckland the following day, and will arrive here on the following Sunday (May 27). The nearest Fiji connection with the Moana, which calls at Suva on May 15, is the i Navua, Vhich leaves Fiji on the 24th May 1 and is due here on the 28th, one day later than via Sydney, so that the mails will be transported in the ordinary course. , Passengers for Australia and New Zea- ' land intending to come forward by the j Sonoma will probably come forward by I tho Moana, by way of Vancouver. BRIDGING THE GAP. HOMEWARD MAILS BY DIRECT STEAMERS. , Mr. Senn, chief postmaster at Auckland, lias received the following telegrams froni Mr. Rose, Acting-Secrettiry to tie Post and Ttlugjaph Department*. "Sailings of steamers from San Francisco temporarily suspended. Am endeavouring to divert mail which should have left there on 19th by way of Vancouver, but fear little chance of arranging this, as there is no telegraphic communication open yet." "Owing to uncertainty about mails petting prompt despatch from San Francisco, it i 3 at present intended to send all mails for United Kingdom and Continent of Europe by Gothic, leaving Wellington about the 28th. Send correspondence day by day to Wellington accordingly tied in bundles and labelled. I I will advise you later if any change in i arrangements. Inform public and subi offices."
