LAWN TENNIS.

Everywhere in Auckland comment has been passed on the excellent state oi the weather that prevailed during the Eaeter holidays. In fact, the weather vva-s perfect, and left nothing to be. desired. This was especially so as far as tennis enthusiasts weve concerned. Beautifully clear and bright, with the wind an unknown quantity, and with a warm sun bhiniug- down on the variegated dresses of the ladies, the Eden and Epsom courts, «o nicely located and kept in such perfect order, bore an animated appearance indeed.

The tournament, for which an imusually large number of entries were received, and of which it is pleaaing to state, as showing tho increasing popularity of the game, a. large percentage were of young and promising players, was brought to a close on Tuesday evening last. ■

On Saturday. Monday and Tuesday the courts were taxed to their utmost. Mr 11. R. Cooke arranged the order of play, and carried out a difficult part of the management with success. Mr B. R. Keesing got through au immense amount of work in a quiet manner, and as a secretary is hard to beat.

Taking everything into consideration —the lovely weather, the large number of entries, the interest manifested throughout, the oven handica.pping, and the effective management—'the tournament was one of the most successful held in Auckland for some years.

The results of the various rounds have already appeared in the "Star."

In the men's singles W. A. Brown scored a well-deserved, win. He beat Morpeth in the final 7—6, I—6, 6—2. Brown is in the final of the combined with Miss D. Udy, and they play off with McGhie and Mies Parsons.

In the men's doubles Mdrpeth and Upton beat Dr. Keith and A. S. C. Brown in the final, 3—6, 6—l, (i— 4. In this match every point was evenly contested, and with the exception of a few brilliant shots by Upton was more of a careful and accurate game rather than a hard game. Upton was playing splendidly, and with rare judgment, and it might be put down to their good placing and volleying that Upton and Morpeth won. Keith played his usual careful game from the base line, but had too much of the court to cover. Br.own got very few chances of smashing at the net. Morpeth played very carefully throughout, and was placing well.

In the B grade of the men's singles H. W. Cooke beat Black after a very close struggle.

Ladies' Singles: Miss Pieken received a bye from Miss D. Udy, and plays the winner of Mrs Cooper and Miss Gray in the final.

Ladies' Doubles: Mrs Cooper and Miss Williams play off with Misses Stewart and Brown.

A party •of West End players took part in a tournament held at Dargaville at Easter, but were unable to complete their matches before leaving for Auckland. Messrs. McCoy, Paterson, and Angus won their rounds in the singles, but they had to scratch. Owing to the heavy rain that prevailed during the week the grass courts could not be used on the Friday or Saturday. The party however, were hospitably entertained, and had a very good time. During their stay they visited the Wairoa falls, and had a very pleasant launch trip up the river.

At Ngaruawahia Messrs. E. A. Cox and Mowbray, both of the Parnell Club, seem to have had a very good time co far as the prizes are concerned. They won the final of the doubles, and play each other in the final of the singles.

The team that represented the Auckland University at Ghrietehurch in the University sports were not rery successful in the tennis events. It ia always difficult to get a strong team together
