REPORTED DISCOVERY OF GOLD.
STATED TO BE A CANARD.

. C AMBBIBGE, this day. A report has been published that gold was found about nine miles from Cambridge, and it was suggested that the. field might.he at Maungatantire. A piece of quartz showing gold was exhibited in Cambridge yesterday as having come from the new find. The whole : affair is looked up as a canard, the facts being that -"some 'days ~\ ago-what was thought to be traces of gold were found at' the Matamata side of: the Taotaoroa range, and I understand that the Government was conunnnicated with regarding it. Hearing a local Joker exhibited some bid well-worn specimen as having been found at Taotaoroa, with the result that a little excitement resulted. .■ 'J&f? "?.?t ..
