G- Hill pleaded guilty to having signed a receipt for £12 3/< without stamping it. He explained that he had no intention of defrauding the revenue, but his economy of a penny j stamp, cost him a, penalty of £1. . ! A Betting Boy.——Cecil Slade, aged 17 , pleaded guilty to having stolen various ! sums totalling £4 15/, the property of bis employer, a fruiterer named James ' Valentiite. Mr. J- R. Lundon, who defended, said- the accused was addicted to , betting in sixpences. One redeeming fea- ! ture of the affair was that Slade made a, clean breast of the matter. The magistrate remanded the accused on bail until Wednesdays with the object of givins him the benefit of the Probation Act if the. reporfo was favourable. ProhiltitevL—Benjamin. C. Paul waa prohibited for 12 months upon the application of one of his relatives. Maintenance.—Thomas Godkin was ordered to-.gay 7/6 weekly towards the maintenance ipf his son. . .An Absconder.—A boy named Emmanuel Santo, who had absconded from St. Marys Orphanage Industrial School at Takapuna;-was ordered to be sent to Stoke Orphanage. A Cheque IFraud.—Jotei Corkin was prosecuted byr Chief Detective Marsack on a charge vQf forging and uttering a cheque for £3-5/. ■ Evidence was. given | showing that an officer at the Salvation Army shelter Vas/asked by ithe accused to cash a cheque which he said was for work done at Ilaeroa for- a farmer named Thorpe. He was given a sovereign on account, andthe cheque passed into the hands of tie bank, which returned it, the signature being quite unlike that of Thorpe's. which it was / intended to represent.
