The Conference between the pastoralists and the Workers' Union has been postponed owing to the registration of the -union under the Arbitration Act, the pastoraEsts fearing that a dispute may be created which may involve other States. The death is. announced of Sir Adye Douglas, the Tasmanian politician, aged 9L [Sir Adye Douglas, whose father was an army officer, was born at Thorpe, near Norwich, in ISIS, entered the legal profession, and at 23 emigrated to Tasmania, where he was admitted to the local bar, but preferred to pursue a pastoral life in the then young settlement of Victoria. In 1842, having returned to Tasmania, he resinned the practice of the law, and quickly achieved a leading position. He also became a prominent member of the Anti-Transportation Associa- . tion, and, 1556, member for Launceston in the old. Legislative Council. He helped greatly towards the liberalizing of the' basis of the Tasmanian Constitution, and was chiefly instrumental, after a visit to England, in introducing the railway system. In. August, 1884, he Premier and Chief Secretary of the Colony, resigning in 1886, when he became AgentGeneral.
