POLICE COURT.

THIS DAY. (Before Mr. C. 0. Kettle, S;2tf'.y ; The Inebriates.-—A first offender wae fined 5/ with costs, and a young man named John Farley paid a fine of 10/ with costs. He was further charged •with assaulting William Henry. The police stated-that-iFarJey-strack- the complainant violently in the mouth quite 'Without provocation. The' defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined £2 or 14 days' imprisonment. Theft from a Dwelling.—William Ernest Harrison pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing £2 10/ from the dwelling of Emma Foley, in Hobsonatreet. Annie Smyth gave evidence that while on a visit to Auckland she stayed at Mrs. Foley's house. She hung up her coat in the kitchen while she went to Parnell for the afternoon. There were two £ 1 notes and some silver in one of the pockets. When she returned, Harrison was sitting near the coat. When they were having tea tlie accused i pulled out two riofes which seemed to Jbe similar in colour to those she hail leit wrapped in her handkerchief in the '• coat. She examined the coat, missed the money and handkerchief, and charged I the accused with the theft. "When HaTrison was searched in the police office, witness saw her handkerchief taken from him. The accused declared that he was too drunk to know what he did, but the magistrate surmised that he shamed inebriety to get an opportunity of stealing. Harrison was sentenced to three months' hard labour.

An TJnlighted Hoarding.—John David Jones, a builder, was fined £1 with costs for failing to light a- hoarding in Customs-street after .sunset.

Children's Maintenance. — William •John Blair,, who had .been arrested on a warrant charging him with neglecting to maintain his twß children, offered to pay £2 per month. Mr Singer, who represented Mrs Blair, said the defendant, deserted his wife four years ago, since when he had only paid £1 for the support of his family. An order was made for the payment of 15/ per week,- the defendant to pay w>sts and find sureties for -compliance with the order. . .
