LAWN TENNIS.

(By. .Volley.).

The Auckland Lawn Tennis Association have decided that the finals for the several championship events be played on Monday next, 29th inst., at the West End Club's Courts. Green-street, off St. Mary's road, Ponsonby. The West End Club has kindly consented to the use of their lawns, and are doing everything in their power to get them in perfect order.

As it is not yet known who are to play off for the finals we are unable to give their names, but these and the time of commencement of the various matches -will appear on Monday next. Given a fine day one may expect to see some very good tennis. The following matches have been played in the championship events:—Men's Doubles. —Paterson and Upton (West End) beat Billing and Bamford (Mt. Eden), 6—3, I—6, 6—2, I—6,1 —6, 6—i. The game was very eveiify contested. Paterson was very severe on short lobs, and Upton was driving and placing with efl'eet. The Eden-Epsom pair did not play with much stingy in their shots, and were more on the defensive than their opponents. Grossman and Mair beat A. is. C. Brown and Heather, 6—4, 2—C, o—4, ti—4. Grossman is a very neat player, and volleys with great accuracy. In fact, he relies on his volleying powers, and volleys everything. Although perhaps not quite so effective as Brown at times, his general steadiness and fine placing have the desired effect. Heather plays the steady game, and gets a lot df difficult balls back.

Morpeth and Hickson beat W. A. Brown and Ruddock, 6—3, 6—3, 7 —5. The West End players were very steady and accurate, and towards the end 'of the match were playing with confidence. Ruddock got in some very hard drives, but was not so good in his net work.

Combined. —Billing and Miss D. Udy beat Upton and Miss G. Gorrie, 6—l, B—6. Miss Udy has a. splendid drive and keeps a perfect length. Her accuracy gives her partner a good position, and enables him to put in the finishing stroke at the net. Miss G. Gorrie plays steadily and pluckily. The second set was very close. W. A. Brown and Miss A. Stewart beat H. R. Cooke and Mrs Cooper. The game was keenly contested throughout. Brown was playing very well at the net, and had a lot of work to get through. Cooke plays more from the base line, and with a "cut."' The day was not suitable for his style of play, and consequently his cuts had no great effect.

Men's Singles.—Dr. Keith beat Dr. Bamford, 6—2, 6 —o, 6—l. Bamford enendeavoured to force the play—driving hard and well, and occasionally running in, but his tactics were of no avail against Keith., whose side line screw shots and general knowledge of how best to beat an opponent had Bamford out of position or out of court many times. However, Bamford put up 3. determined and good fight against such .a redoubtable opponent. A. S. C. Brown beat Hickson, 3—6, 7 —5, 6 —2, 6—2. The West End player is to be congratulated in winning a set., and making such a good fight in the remainder of the game. Brown's knowledge of the game and his jihysical fitnes-s carried him through, , U\i\ his. opponent tired eon-" siderably towards the close of the match. Grossman beat Pickmere, 6—o, C—4, o—o.0 —0. Pickmere was driving very hard and played well, but Grossman playing at the net and volleying well throughout won comfortably. A. F. Billing beat Heather, 6 —4, 6 — 4, B—6.8 —6. Owing to an error in the score the match between Keith and Miss Holland and Grossman and Miss Buttle was replayed. Grossmau and Miss Buttle won after a very eveu game, 7—5, O—C, 7—5.
