POLICE COURT.

THIS DAY. (Before Mr C. C. Kettle, S.M.) The Inebriates. —Christina Stewart, a prohibited person, was fined 20/ and costs, James Quoid 20/ and costs, Charles Campbell 10/ and cab hire (2/6). Two first offenders were also punished. Obscene Language. —A single, middleaged man named David Crosland, charged with using obscene language in Symonds-street yesterday, said he had come into town, like any other ordinary person, and .made a few occasional remarks. His Worship said the language used was of a nature that could not be allowed in the public streets, especially when people were passing on their way to church. The acensed was remanded until to-morrow.

A Stowaway. — Arthur Nicholson, a young man, who said he had a wife and family in Australia, pleaded guilty to stowing away on the Victoria from Sydney to Auckland last week. The ship's purser said that £2 17/6 had been since paid by the accused, but that 17/6 was still wanted. In answer to the magistrate, he purser said all the company wanted was the fare. The accused, who had nothing to say for himself in defence, was sentenced to 7 days' imprisonment, assuming that the fare was fully paid.

Indecent Exposure.—Charles Campbell, on a charge of indecently exposing his person in Yelverton Terrace, pleaded "Not guilty," and was remanded until to-morrow to allow of evidence being produced by the prosecution.

Assault.—On the application of Mr McVeagh, James Wm. Rawnsley, on a charge of assaulting Joseph Guy on November 17, was remanded for a further week.

Child, Desertion. —A well-dressed woman, Madame de Lassollaye, appeared on a charge of deserting her child at New Plymouth. Chief-Detective Marsack, who prosecuted, said the woman was arrested yesterday, and he applied for a remand in order to procure further evidence. The remand was granted and the accused released on two sureties of £25 each. Lucy Mackie, upon a similar charge, was ordered to pay 5/ a week towards her child's maintenance.

Breach of Electoral Act. —Ross R. W. Fowler appeared to a charge of wilfully and knowingly making false statements on October 24 last in a claim for enrolment as an elector in the Auckland Central electorate. The accused saifl. he had been in the colony for six months and had thought that was sufficient to qualify him to vote. The magistrate fined him £2 and costs. John Massey, upon a similar charge, pleaded that he thought it was only necessary to have been in the colony twelve months at the time of the elections. In answer to His Worship the accused admitted having said after signing the declaration that he did not much care whether it was correct or not. Defendant was fined £2 and cost 3.

Eunice E. Templeton, charged with making a declaration to the effect that she had been a resident in the City Central electorate for a perior of three months, whereas she had only resided within it for a fortnight at the time ot the declaration, was represented by Mr. Hackett. Mr. Hackett said that his client had committed a technical breach. She had been a resident in Ponsonby for over three years,' and could have saved herself any trouble by merely applying for a transfer. She had signed the declaration,, however, without reading it carefully, otherwise she would not have signed it. Mr. Mays, for the Crown, did not press the matter, and His Worship, after warning the accused of the danger which she ran of signing documents without carefully reading them, dismissed the ease, with costs against the accused.
