The committee of the Auckland Racing Club cannot be accused of making a hurried appointment to the secretaryship. The question has been deferred till Monday neit, the 23rd Inst., when probably a decision will be arrived at.

The pony Annoyed which was the subject of recent litigation, was sold by auction yesterday by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company for 73 guineas, Mr E. Davis being the purchaser. It is stated there is a likelihood of the mare going to Sydney to race.

The A.R.C. handieapper (Sir J. O. Evett) Js stated to be making a speedy recovery from his recent illness, and it is anticipated that he will be able to frame the handicaps •for the minor events on the opening day •of the A.R.C. Spring Meeting, which are ■due on Monday' next, the 23rd inst.

Mr E. J. Watt has evidently made up his .mind to send a team to Auckland to compete at the A.R.C. Spring Meeting. Both TClng Billy and Boomerang have been freely nominated for the handicap events, while -jhey have both been left in the Auckland Guineas. Mr Watt's two-year-old Little Mary appears amongst the nominations for the two-year-old events.

After Te Papa had won the Hurdle Race <at the recent Otahuhu Racing Club's M etJng a protest was lodged by the owner ot Bachelor, who ran second, on the grounds jthat the mare was In the forfeit list lor nn amount owed by a former owuer. The committee met on Monday last, when tne protest was dismissed. The owner of .Bachelor, however, is dissatisfied with the decision, and Intends taking the case to the Appeal Court of the Conference.

It says very little for the members of the Pakuranga Hunt Club when they can only muster up two horses to compete for the Hunt Club Cup. which is run on th* concluding day of the A.R.C. Spring MeetIr.g. The event has only attracted seven ci" rants and live of these hail from the Ualkato. Probably if the rule which prevents hunters being trained by professional trainers wa.s done away with there would <be more horses put iu'.o work.

Martello. by Hotchkiss — Rose of Wellington, who realised the highest price at the Wellington Park sale two years afro, .made his debut on the racecourse in the Shorts Handicap on tn" opening day of the •Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting. •Martello only had tbe lenient Iruposi of 7st f.lli in the race, but according to the tele'grapned account he was never prominent. A big commission in Martello's favour was worked in Auckland, so evidently he carried the 'confidence of his party.

The acceptances received "for the New Zealand Cup throw very little light yet on the subject. Mr Stead ha.s accepted with liis trio, and we are therefore siiM in the dark as to which of hi* candidates is likely *.. be the right oue. Uutll Mr Stead's intentions -are made known betting on the race ia no! likely to be very brisk. The two top-weia-hts, Achilles and Mahutongn, sill! remain in, as dy Quarr>-,n:in. Mclodeou atid Parltutn. all of which have been supported. Cold Crown is a noticeable defection, the stable evidently preferring Achilles #ud Ghoo.rka.

Jf Will be some time before the local punters forget Trafalgar Day, when the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting commented. I'uiiters generally were rout-ed-us severely as the French were on that historical day 100 years ago. Big commissions were worked in favour of Martello In the Shorts. Black Reynard in the Wellington Handicap, Gnzely in the Hack Handicap, and Truce iii the Spring Handicap, bur' in every case the selected one •fftiled. II is n long while since the layers have had such a series of turn Ups.

The autobiography of Robert Sievier, who was known in Adelaide and Melbourne as Sutton, the bookmaker, bus been published. Sievier say:; that on arriving in Adelaide from Engi.-.nd be had little money, and that he went to his first day's race meeting at Morphetville with only a few piunds in his pocket;!. Still, by introducing up-to-date, English bookmaking methods, instead of the mode of doing business which prevailed in Australia at that time, he made a profit on the day of £1700, and bis first year as a bookmaker In Austialia resulted in a gain of £70,000. Rather a good tale Is told of what happened when he was returning in 188G to England for a trip. "One of the passengers ou board the boat,"' writes Sievier, "was Bishop Moorhouse, who was returning to England to take up the bishopric of Manchester. A better type of Englishman, a more genial companion than his loidshlp, no one could hope to meet. It was announced that he 'Would administer the communion at oue of the Sunday services, and in due course the Sabbath arrived, but no preparation had been made for the carrying out of the communion service. Suddenly this was remembered, but no chalice was forthcoming. Mr Hairy Haines, who w r as one of the best sportsmen Australia has seen, imtnecjiatelv oTored the use of a cup be had with him. This was accepted on the spur of the moment, and after the service the bishop was admiring the trophy which had done daty for the chalice, when he read the following inscription: 'The Adelaide Gold Tup, won by Euclid, the property of Mr Harry Haines.' " in a portion of his re-cf-utly published autobiography Sievier says: '"I can say that I have lost thousands

The success of the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting was marred by wretched weather. The morning broke fine, but about half-past ten o'clock heavy rain set In and deterred many people from visiting the Hutt course. Towards noon the weather cleared, but the improvement was only temporary, and the afternoon turned out showery, and two or three of the events were run in beavy rain. In the circumstances the attendance was satisfactory. The course was very heavy, but on the whole a very interesting day's sport was provided.
