NORTHERN COMPANY'S NEW STEAMERS.
The Northern Co.'s new steamer Apanui arrived from Glasgow, via Port Said and Fremantle, this afternoon. The vessel is in command of Captain D/kt-s.
The Apanui Is the first of three steamers o'.dered from Messrs Dunlop and Co., of fort Glasgow. She ls of the following dimensions: Length between perpendi'-u----,ars 110 ft, breadth moulded 22ft. depth moulded 9ft Cm. Her machinery consist, of one set of triple expansion engines, having cylinders B_ln, 14_iu aud 23_in diameter by 151n length of strokes, with one large niultitubu ar boiler, working at a pressnre of IStfb per squaie inch. The Apanui is of the two-masted fore and aft schooner typ>. being specially rigged for the voyage. The hull aud machinery have been built under the survey and to the requirements of the Board of Trade for passt-nger service, and accommodation Is piovlded as f oilows:—Under the rafced quarter rlee'k. aft. a handsome dining salooet in po!i?hed oak Is tip. "having sofa berths for sleeping about 18 first e-lass passengers, vrhi'Ft at the forward end of tiie bridge, on the starboard side, is a eapa•ious saloon in hardwood for adies, which affords s.eeping accommodation for about ten persons. The captain, ofiicers, engineers, stewards, etc.. are provided for uudt r the bridge ln the remaining available space, alongside the engine and boiler casings- The sailors and firemen have their iltiaiters under a break forecastle. Peak tanks are provided forward and aft for dimming the vessel. The decks are all of teak. Kacb cargo hold, forward and aft. is furnished with one eif Clarke Chapman snd Co.'s special steam winches, and on 'he forecastle head 's placed *5n Emerson Wa'ker and patent steam wiod'nss fc~ workinr- iinohors. The steam steering z.-ar is of Davis' pateut amidships ami Mastics* crew hand geaaft.
