CHARGE OF FORGERY.

Wiffiafa Wakely. defended -by }fc Haekett.- was charged at the Police Court to-day with having forged a. receipt to an order for the payment of £1 by signing the name of George A. i Wright. Chief-Detective Marsaek in- \ formed the Court that a man naniei I Wright came to" Ne\v Zealand from Ausi trails some time ago, and was in tie habit of receiving postal notes from wife. One was due in -July, but was not received, and Wright, having made the necessary declaration, wa-s given a duplicate. He then received the money, bat a few days afterward-? the original order was presented by the accused, who represented himself as Wright, and iorg-i the owner 7 :? name to the receipt. He had [ since admitted that he was nos Wright, J but alleged that he purchased the order I from another person. He was not charged with stealing the order, but wita committing forgery on the receipt. Henry Kissel, chief money-ord.-r clerk in the Auckland Post Uiik-e. -tared that on September sth. the original order Issued to Mrs Wright in Australia was presented by the accused for payment. Wakely was questioned, and saij he "George Alexander Wright" who ha.i been sent the order by his wife. He wrote out a signature a≤ "Gen. A. Wright." , and witness then gave Him ia. charge. Wakely admitted the charge, and gave evidence that he had been working ea 1 the railway south of Taumarunui.
