EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH. tbis day. Mr G. -W. Russell, chairman of %he recent Education Boards' Conference, on being asked whether the presence of departmental "officials at the conference hampered the discussion of alleged grievances, replied that the presence of inspectors and secretaries of boards was beneficial. The inspectors took a most active and useful part iv the conference. The opinions of Messrs. Petrie (Auckland), Hill (Hawke's Bay), Ritchie (Canterbury), Goggan (Dunedin), and Gray. (Wanganui), were of the greatest assistance to the conference. "It was really (education," lje v ,remarked, "to hear the views of the inspectors from such welisettled parts as Canterbury and Otago, on one hand, and those with a knowledge of the backblocks of Hawke's Bay and Wanganui, on the other." The ln-spector-General and the Secretary" for Education were both invited to the conference, and though they had no vote in the proceedings the Inspector-General rendered valuable assistance in explaining the position of his department whenever necessary.
