GREY LYNN DRAINAGE.

■ The necessity for providing for further drainage in the uewly-built-upon portions of Hie Borough of Grey Lynn has been under the consideration of the Council for some time past. The rapid spread of buildings during the last year or two. particularly in the Richmond district, has emphasised the urgent need for not only exteuding the drainage system, but also for erecting septic tanks to prevent the discharge of offensive matter into the harbour. At the meeting of the Council last night a letter was read from the borough engineer (Mr 11. M. Wilson) forwarding plans a.id estimates of the cost of providing an efficient sewerage system for the area buUt upon in the borough, together with septic tank and effluent pipe. The total cost was estimated by Mr Wilson at £fI.SOO, portioued off as follows: —Outfall sewer, Crummer road to Cox's Creek main sewer, £400: portion Northcote street (Crummer road to Campbell road), £83; portion Harcourt si. The Mayor said that the plans were practically for all possible future drainage re- . qulrementß. He moved that a special mooting of the Council be held to go into th" matter. He considn-pd the work was an ' urgent one that should he placed before the ratepayers at the earliest possible date. With a good drainage system, which would permit of the installation of n water-closet system, there would be a great annual saving iv the sanitnrv service alone, besides Improving the healthfulness of the borough. Mr A. Creamer said the borough had three miles of sen-board, consequently the Council required to consider very carefully ' (he matter of disposal of the effluent from tho septic tank. The plans were referred to a special raeet- - ins of the Council.
