TABERNACLE LITERARY SOCIETY. Pastor Clark presided last night over a good attendance of mem hers. the evening Being devoted to readings at si>rht. These were selected from "and Emerson's essays and Dr. Smiles' "ijelf-Help." Criticisms followed each reading. XO-UCEXSE MEETING AT PAEXELL The Rev. L. 11. laitt delivered a nolicense lecture in the Oddfellows' Hall, Paruell, last night to an audience of about 200 people. Mr C. Wood presided. The lecturer drew a soinewoat harrowing pictur" of the misery and desolation that, he averred, hail been evidenced of bite in Auckland as the result of alcoholic imbibing*, and nsked his audience to become rabid temperance reformers anil strike out the top line. At the conclusion of the address a number of questions were put and answered. THE REAL SOUTH AFRICA. The J. B. Flynn Anderson, of Johaiinesborsr. lectured before a large audience in St. David's Hall last evening un "The Real Srvuth Africa." The lecturer was assisted by some hundreds of hintern views. Mr Anderson gave a most favourable description of the country of his adoption, described its husre undeveloped resources, and advised energetic and ambitious young men to sive the country a trial. The lectur' was listened to with the keenest interest by the large audience present. DEVO>rPORT GOLF OLCB. Dr. Lain? presided over a meeting in the Devonport Borough Council Chambers last nieht for the purpose of considering the advisability of forming a golf club, at Devonport. The chairman said that Messrs R. and R. Duder and E. W. and A. AJison had placed their ground? at Narrow Neck, and p;irt of the Taknpnna raeeeonrse. at the disposal of the clnb. if formed. An estimate of the cost of preparing the ground was given by rhe chairman. It wzs then resolved on the motion of Mr W. After a lengthy order paper had been disposed of it was resolved on the motion of Mr J.
