THE NEW ZEALAND NATURE STUDY BOOK.
New Zealand has been exceptionally fortunate in the number of students of science and educationists who have turned' their attention to the natural features of the country, and embodied the results of their observations and researches in books adapted for the use of elementary and secondary schools. The latest of these works is entitled, "The New Zealand Nature-Study Book," by E. K. Mulgan, M.A., Inspector of Schools, Auckland. It is a text-book extending over 333 pages, intended as a guide to the nature study section of the new syllabus. The author introduces his subject with several lucid chapters on botany, which are admirably illustrated. These treat of the structure and growth of plants. Part 11. deals in a similar manner with animal life. Part 111. is devoted to minerals and rocks. Although the main purpose of the book as a guide to Nature study is necessarily general, Mr. Mulgan employs, wherever ' practicable, illustrations from the flora and fauna of New Zealand. This method will not only increase the interest of students using the book, but it serves to extend among the youth of our colony, a knowledge of their native land. The book is well arranged and admirably illustrated. It is published by Whitcombe and Tombs, 'Limitled.
