The magistrate said that the fathers.of i the accused were much to blame for ! not looking af er the lads properly, and regretted he had not the power to punish the parents. CHILD DROWNED IN A TANK. WANGANUI, Friday. A four-year-old son of Major Hughes, of Marybank. was drowned this afternoon by falling into a concrete tank, the lid of which had been dis'urbed. The body was recovered and medical aid procured. Efforts to restore animation were made for about an hour, but without avail. DUNEDIN POLICE CASE. DUNEDIN, FridayThe Police Court was engaged all day in hearing the charges of breaking and entering and stealing against constables. Alfred Henry Oaborne was commi ted for trial on three charges, the articles including silk handkerchiefs, envelopes, paper, soap, tobacco, pipes, etc., from three different premises. Bail was allowed accused in £400, and two sureties of £200 each. The charge against Edward Quill, of stealing a rug, pieces of tweed, etc., was parlly heard and adjourned till Monday. In the ■ cases j against Osborne, he explained, when I arrested, how h e came by some of the I goods. Some of the articles, he snid. he (bought, others were given, to him by Constable Moses- The tobacco was given by Quill and a man named Ridding'on, who had found a tobacconist's shop open.
