MEETINGS & ENTERTAINMENTS

GORDON RIFLES. The members of the Gordon Rifles held an annual meeting last evening, when the report showed an Increase of £16 17s 3d in the company's credit during the year. A sum of £30 was written off for depreciation, leaving £413 as the assets, against liabilities of £80. This sum vas due on the new uniforms. Privates Johns and West were appointed a finance committee, and Sergeants Woods, Martin, and Parker, and Col.-Sergoant Cairn a shooting committee. A smofce concert followed in the Federal Club room, and Lieut.-Col. Abbott, D.5.0.. Captain and Adjutant Ilaxrowell, and othtr guests joined the party. The year's prizes were distributed, and a musical programme was given, the contributors being Col.- Sergeant Cairn, Private West, and Messrs. K. A. Keenan, Gallagher, H. J'atthens, HI. Gumming, Vowles, G. Kni£i?3, sneppard, and Brennan. CHURCH OF ENGLAND MEN'S SOCIETYA meeting of churchmen was held in All Saints' Pariah Hall. Ponsonby road, on Thursday evening-, to Inaugurate a parochial branch of the Church of England Men's Society. The Veil. Archdeacon Calder presided. Letters of apology were read from Mr A. Littler (churchwarden) and Captain Duder, expressing their desire to join in the movement, and wishing every success to the venture. The Eev. H. A. Favell said that several other gentlemen who wcve unable to be present had announced their 'intention of joining the society. The need of some organisation for bringing the men of the parishes together was only too apparent. Undoubtedly one of tha reasons for the indifference and apathy of men in regard to the Church was to be found iv the colduess and want of fellowship which existed amongst thnee men who were already in tie congregations. It had been well said recently that if at the Reformation we got back to the Apostles' doctrine, there was urgent need of another Reformation to bring us back to the Aposties' fellowship. The sense of unity within the Church needed to be developed before they could hope to be successful in gathering iv those who at present were outside. An interesting discussion followed, iv. the course of which several questions were asked and answerc-d. It was decided to hold quarterly meetings for thp discussion of questions affecting the welfare of the parish, and that the members should meet twice in the year for a Corporate Communion—on Ascension Day and on tbp first Sunday in Advent. The churchwardens of the parish (Messrs A. S. Russell and A. Littler) were to be ex offieio v-ic-e-prp?idents, Councillor C. J. Parr was elected treasurer, and Mr H. G. Stevens secretary. At the conclusion of the meeting several gentleman enrolled themselves as members of the society.
