COUNTRY DEPUTATIONS,

When at Ongarue the Hon. C. H. Mills was requested by a deputation to represent to the Postmaster-General the necessity that exists for the establishment there of a money order office and post oflice savings bank. A deputation at Te Kuiti saw him with regard to a petition that had been sent to the Minister for Education, praying that the native school be placed under the Education Board. It was stated that there were 80 pupils On the roll of the Te Kuiti School, the majority of whom were the children of pakehas, and that in consequence of the present teaching extending only to the fourth standard local children.had to be sent to Auckland to complete their education. It was further stated that a native school had some time ago beein promised for Opouaria, three miles distant, and the suggestion was made that the present native school be transferred there. At Kawhia a deputation urged that the bush and forest reserves in the Whareorino and Ivlaungamangero districts, in Kawhia South, be thrown open for selection. They said that in some cases when settlers were burning their bush it was a physical impossibility to prevent fire from spreading to those reserves, and that for this and other reasons they seriously retarded settlement. A request was also made that the work of constructing the main coast road from Te Maika to Marokopa bridge site be put in hand as soon as possible. The deputation mentioned that 100 hands were employed in connection with flaxmilling industry in that part of the district. They also desired that a start be made with Kinohaku-road and the main coast road from Rara Rimu Junction lo the bridge site at Marokopo. Mr. Mills promised on his return-to Wellington to bring the representations of the various deputations before the Ministers in charge of Departments concerned, and as far as possible to further their wishes
