I Some of the most horrible scenes ! which, have been 'witnessed since the beginning of the popular movement in Russia occurred during , the recent strike at Lodz and Losnovitch, in Poland. j The outrages began in the yard ! of the Poznanski factory at Lodz, where a very large number of workpeople are ordinarily employed. Here a crowd of women and chii- : dren had collected, when the manager suddenly locked the gpttes of I the factory, and blew a •whistle. A detachment of Cossacks, the j greater part of whom were at dif- j f erent stages of drunkenness, an- I swered the call, and proceeded to the most unheard-of brutalities. They began by knocking down j their feeble opponents, and then j trampled them to death. Fourteen I were killed at the outset. ! Next they drove their victims to | the water, where sixteen were I drowned. A body of Cossacks also attacked the workmen at the Catherine j works at liosnoviteh, and, firing a ! volley upon them, killed and i wounded seventeen. After they had been plundered of all their posses- \ sions the helpless men were thrown j —several still living, and shrieking for meroy—into the roaring fires of j the furnaces. \ Later on their charred remains ! bore out the nature of their fate. j
