ST. JOHN AMBULANCE SOCIETY

GOVERNOR PRESENTS CERTIFICATES. His Excellency the Governor this afternoon presented the certificates won by students of the St. John Ambulance Society. The ceremony took place at government House in the presence of a arge number of invited guests, and both His Excellency (who is president of the S.Z. Society) and the Mayor of Auckland, the Hon. E. Miteheison (who is presarient of the Auckland Societvl, gave interesting: addresses. The Mayor, in his opening remarks, said that the thanks of the local Society were due to His Excellency for his kindness in permitting the presentation of certificate;, at Cpvenmient House. Referring to the results of the past season, the Hon. Mr. Miteheison said that the work done by members had been mo«t satisfactory, and lectures had been numerous and well attended, especially hi Auckland. The thanks of the Society were heartily extended to the medical men who had so generously s j T en time and trouble to the tuition of the students. Mr. Mitchelson said the special features of the ye«r had been the large number of elates held and the high standard ot efficiency obtained as shown by the general success of (he students at the examination. In regard to the future Mr MHvchelsoii considered it would be advisable that those ladies who had passed the nrst aid and nursing- exajmnatios should from themselves into a Nurses" Division v,here they could meet together for practice aud so keep up the high state of efficiency to which they had attained. Such division could be formed at once in the city, at Onehunga- and at Thames. In that lust place such a. division could be of the orea-test service and would always l>e varaafble iv ;i district where accident's were so fre irue.nt. It was also extremely desirable that something sliould be done in the direction of providing for the more efficient nan-sing of the sick poor- This was being done in some of the southern cities, and to sonw extent by the different, chfliritaiblc organisations, but there p.xisrxjrl n great field for useful -work by the members of the Society in this direction. (Applause.)

His Excellency the Governor, in presenting the certificates, briefly addressed the visitors. He expressed his entire admiration for and sympathy with the splendid humanitarian work being done by the St. John Ambulance Society, and he fell pleased that he was president of the Xew Zen laud Society. (Applause.) There were constantly arising incidents in which the knowledge gained by students, of the Society could bo turned to account in relieving human suffering, and ho was pleased to see so many bad applied themselves bo keenly to the work that they had qualified for the certificates of the Society. (Applause.)

His Excellency urged the formation of more country branches than there were at present. There were good classes being carried on at Thames, Paeroa and Hamiltou. but in many of the mining and sawmilling centres there were. His Excellency understood, no classes. The society should use every effort to extend its operations in that direction, for it could fulfil a useful function. Accidents were sure to arise from lime to time in such places, and immediate attention to them would do much to ease suffering and minimise subsequent danger. (Applause.) His Excellency then presented the certificates and medallions, the successful candidates being as follows: —
