X&y Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day,
At the Magistrate's Court this morning John MeKenzie, alias James ' William Ellis, was charged -with the murder of Leonard D. Collinson at Te Awaite on March 26 of last year. My. T. M. Wilford defended. All the witnesses were ordered out of court. - Mr. Wilford said Tie did not propose to cross-examine, but merely to watch the ease on behalf of accused, and would not interrupt unless he saw something irrelevant. By taking this course he hoped that the case \vould be finished by to-niorrow night. The first evidence was that of the surveyor who prepared the plans of the scene of the murder.
The evidence up to lunch was chiefly formal, and principally consisted in describing the scene of the murder.
Dr. Palmer, of Featherston, who made the post mortem examination, had no doubt that the person who fired the shot was at a higher level than deceased, and that the weapon need wai of calibre of about .300. The wound wae not -caused by a shot from a Snider or smooth bore shot gun. Ross, who was with deceased when the latter met with his death, is now under examination.
